History Maker: Essays in Honour of Brian Smith

In 1976, Brian Smith became Shetland’s first archivist. Since his appointment, however, he has been much more than a record keeper. In his prolific output of essays, books and lectures, he has constantly worked to broaden and deepen our understanding of Shetland’s often obscure history.

The essays in this volume, contributed by leading experts in diverse fields, have been written in this spirit. With subjects ranging from prehistory to the recent past, this book would have looked very different without the work Brian has done.
