Gutters at Work Magnet

The Shetland Museum Photo Archive contains over 60,000 images depicting Shetland life, heritage and culture dating back to the 1800s. This magnet features one such photo from the 1930s, with a group of women gutting herring at Lerwick Harbour. Beside them are empty barrels waiting to be packed with fish and salted down. To protect their hands the 'gutter lasses' wrapped their fingers in cotton strips, usually made from flour sacks.
