In 1970, after seeing Fair Isle knitwear on the streets of London, Chris Morphet, then an aspiring 26-year-old freelance photographer, travelled to pre-oil Shetland to document his fascination with Fair Isle knitwear. Morphet’s candid photos document the lives of Shetland islanders and the distinctive designs celebrated through Shetland Knitwear.
His striking portraits and photography serves as a fascinating social, historical, and cultural record of Fair Isle knitwear and the people who wore it in Shetland - as contemporary and relevant today is it was over 50 years ago.
This postcard set features four photos of knitters at their homes, showcasing the distinctive garments they are wearing and knitting.
Produced to accompany the ALLOVER exhibition at the Shetland Museum & Archives, which runs from September 28th - December 29th 2024.
