Woman with Kishie of Peats Magnet

The Shetland Museum Photo Archive contains over 60,000 images depicting Shetland life, heritage and culture dating back to the 1800s. This magnet features one such photo, with a woman knitting and carrying a kishie full of peats.

It was once common practice across Shetland for women to carry home heavy kishies of peats for burning, while knitting at the same time. The yarn bundle was carried at the waist, and a makkin’ (knitting) belt was worn to make it easier to knit whilst walking.
