1000 piece jigsaw puzzle featuring scarves from Shetland Museum and Archives’ collection dating from 1930 and earlier.
All scarves are hand-knitted, some with hand-dyed and hand-spun yarn. Most were made on the island of Fair Isle, famous for its complex knitting designs. Wide scarves in rich colours were worn until the end of the First World War. Narrow scarves with white backgrounds became popular in the 1920s.
The scarves pictured feature traditional Fair Isle colourways, combining natural shades in white, grey, fawn and moorit (brown), with dyed yarns in yellows, blues and reds. The dyes were made using native and imported plant stuffs. The motifs include variations of OXO patterns, trees, hearts, ram’s horns, zig-zags, diamonds and checkerboards.
Assembled size: 700 x 510 mm
