Most Shetland residents and visitors to the islands see lichens almost everywhere - even if they are unaware of doing so. They are abundant on walls and standing stones where almost the whole rock surface may prove to be clothed in a mixture of variously shaped and coloured lichens.
This account is intended to make it easier for a newcomer to lichenology to make a little progress in understanding what lichens 'do' in Shetland.
