Impressive Iron Age towers, or brochs, have been a feature of the landscape of the north and west of Scotland for around 2000 years. They have inspired, and still do inspired, great enthusiasm, passion and debate and have acted as magnets for antiquarians and archaeologists for more than a century,
The turn of the millenium was therefore a fitting time to hold a conference, drawing the leading experts in the field together with passionate enthusiasts. It was also a fitting time to celebrate the excavation and heritage project at Old Scatness, Shetland, where a partnership of Shetland Amenity Trust and the University of Bradford is carrying out ground breaking studies of brochs and their landscapes.
This volume presents the full spectrum of ideas and beliefs of the leading broch protagonists today.
