In 1958 a remarkable treasure of silver and silver-gilt objects was found on St Ninian's Isle, Shetland. It is one of the most important archaeological discoveries made in Scotland during the 20th century. Dating to around AD800, this is the only Scottist hoard of fine metalwork of this date to suevive in its entirety.
